Stop spam in its tracks using SpamAssassin

If you are using cPanel to make and check email addresses on your web server, you may have noticed that you sure do get a lot of spam. Luckily there is a very easy way to minimize the amount of spam that you get in your webmail.

Enter Spam Assassin

Spam Assassin is a built in tool within cPanel that allows you to create and manage a spam block on your email addresses.

Under the “Mail” section in cPanel you will see an icon titled spamAssassin. When you click on it you will see a button that says “Enable SpamAssassin”. Click the button to enable it.

Setting the spam filter score

The spamAssassin score is a range from 1 to 10. The higher the number is, the more conservative the setting. A score of 1 will mark everything as spam and a score of 10 will mark nothing as spam. The default score is 5. I would leave the score at the default setting of 5 and keep an eye on the spam and move the score up or down accordingly.

Conclusion

Managing spam using spamAssassin is a surprising easy way to filter spam on webmail accounts. An alternative option would be to forward the account to another email client and use their spam block. Check out my post How to Forward an Email Account Using cPanel for more information about this.
