6 Traits of a Qualified Web Developer

Unfortunately, it’s not terribly difficult to dub yourself a web developer. Throw together a portfolio that showcases your work and you’re off to the races. But when you’re looking to hire someone to create a website for your business, you want to make sure that you’re sorting through the would-be designers and are partnering with a professional who knows their stuff. Here are a few key traits that your web developer should have:

The ability to receive feedback

Even the most talented developer probably won’t nail your site on the first try. Inevitably, you’ll want to add or change some aspects of the site until it matches your vision. The right developer will understand this and will be able to receive feedback without getting defensive.

Good communication skills

The ideal developer will communicate with you throughout the process so that you know what to expect during each stage of development. You should never be left hanging as you wonder how your site is progressing.

Strong technical skills

You’ll want to be sure that your web developer has a strong technical understanding of the field. For example, do they create responsive websites that look great on a desktop, laptop, tablet, and cell phone? Do they know how to debug a site? Do they know how to design visually appealing sites?

Willing to subcontract when necessary

It’s never easy to admit when you lack a particular skill, but the right developer will be able to come to terms with this and outsource when appropriate. For example, if your development package comes with photography and content creation, you’ll want to be sure that your developer is willing to outsource the photography and writing aspects if they don’t feel equipped to handle it. There’s no shame in subcontracting in order to ensure that the final product is as perfect as possible.

Upfront about pricing

There’s nothing worse than getting to the end of a design project and learning that you’ll have to pay significantly more than you expected due to costs that your developer didn’t discuss with you in advance. Before hiring a web developer, be sure that you’re fully aware of all of the costs that you’ll be responsible for paying. They should also clearly communicate with you about when this money will be due.

Willing to provide references

Speaking with past clients is a great way to learn about what it’s like to work with this person. A professional developer will have no problem providing a list of references so that you can get a better feel for their process and finished work product.
