7 questions to ask your web designer during a consultation
Choosing the right web designer for your project is essential. Before you decide to partner with a specific design professional, you’ll want to ask a few key questions to get an understanding of what this person is all about and how they work. Here are some questions you may consider asking during a web design consultation call.
1 - Are you able to design a website that fits my budget?
In order to make the consultation call productive for everyone involved, you’ll want to come in with a firm understanding of your budget. Before you decide to work with a particular web designer, you’ll want to be transparent with them about this number and verify that they’re able to work with it.
2 - Who will be my point of contact?
You’ll want to have a good understanding about how the flow of communication will work throughout the project. Getting clarification about your main point of contact helps to prevent any questions from slipping through the cracks.
3 - What is your design process like?
Every designer works a little bit differently, so before you commit to working with someone, you should ask about what their design process is like. This will give you a sense of what to expect throughout the course of the project.
4 - What’s the estimated timeline for the project?
While no designer can predict precisely how long it will take them to build your website, the right person should be able to give you a rough estimate of the timeline for the project. You may find a designer you like, but if it’ll take them three years to finish your website, you’ll probably find that you’re not as interested in working with them anymore.
5 - What will you need from me before you begin working on my site?
In some cases, your designer may ask you to gather relevant copy, photos, or other materials before they get started on your website.
6 - Do you write the copy or is that my responsibility?
If you’re responsible for writing your website copy, you’ll want to be aware of this well in advance so that you have plenty of time to get this task done. There’s nothing worse than having a beautiful website all ready to go live except you’re missing the text to fill it!
7 - Do you offer any services beyond web design?
If writing your website’s copy sounds like a nightmare to you, ask your web designer if they offer any additional services. In some cases, you’ll find that they can provide copywriting or photography services to take some of the work off of your plate.
